Is Zakat due on fruits other than dates and raisins, and on vegetables?
Chapter on Zakat on Crops and Fruits
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
Zakat is not due on other fruits such as peaches, plums, pears, apples, figs, and walnuts. Zakat is also not due on green vegetables (khudra) such as cucumbers, eggplants, turnips, and carrots. This aligns with the view of 'Ata, who accepted Zakat only on all grains, and the position of Abu Yusuf and Muhammad, who held that nothing is due except for what yields a lasting fruit reaching five 'wusq'. This is supported by narrations attributed to 'Ali and 'Aishah stating there is no Sadaqah on green things grown from the earth, and a narration from Mu'adh where the Prophet (PBUH) stated nothing is due on 'khudra' (greens/vegetables).
Supporting text
Malik and Al-Shafi'i hold that Zakat is only due on dates and raisins among fruits, and only on staple grains among seeds, with an exception noted for olives subject to difference of opinion. A narration from Umar regarding a high-yield vineyard confirmed that Zakat was not due, classifying it as 'Idha' (thorny trees).
