When is Zakat exempted for jewelry held for use or lending?
Chapter on Zakat on Gold and Silver
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
Zakat is exempted only when the jewelry is prepared for being worn, lent out, or intended for the family's use, as this diverts it from the purpose of growth. If jewelry is prepared for hiring out or for necessary expenses when needed, Zakat is due because it remains on its original status, which is growth-oriented. Similarly, jewelry taken solely to escape Zakat is not exempted.
