Is Zakat obligatory on flowers such as Saffron, Safflower, and Cotton?
Chapter on Zakat on Crops and Fruits
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
Zakat is not obligatory on flowers such as saffron, safflower, and cotton because they are neither grain nor fruit, nor are they measured by volume, thus resembling vegetables on which Zakat is not due. Ahmad stated that there is nothing due on cotton and that there is no Zakat on saffron. This is the apparent position of Al-Khiraqi and the chosen view of Abu Bakr.
Supporting text
It is reported from Ali that there is Zakat in fruits, herbs, spices, and saffron. Umar, and Abdullah bin Umar, stated that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, only legislated Zakat on wheat, barley, dates, and raisins.
