Is Zakat obligatory on honey?
Chapter on Zakat on Crops and Fruits
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
Zakat is obligatory on honey, amounting to one-tenth (Al-'Ushr). This view is held by Ahmad, who stated that Umar took Zakat from them, and it was not a voluntary act but a required deduction. This opinion is narrated from Umar bin Abdul Aziz, Makhul, Al-Zuhri, Sulayman bin Musa, Al-Awza'i, and Ishaq. The evidence for this ruling includes the narration from Amr bin Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to have taken from the honey containers in his time, one container out of every ten of medium size. Furthermore, Sulayman bin Musa narrated that Abu Siyar Al-Mutai' asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about his bees, and the Prophet commanded him to give one-tenth of them. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also commanded the tithe on honey.

Malik, Al-Shafi'i, Ibn Abi Layla, Al-Hasan bin Salih, and Ibn al-Mundhir hold that there is no Zakat on honey because it is a liquid substance originating from an animal, similar to milk. Ibn al-Mundhir states there is no established report or consensus regarding the obligation of Sadaqah on honey.
