Is Zakat obligatory on jewelry (hily) that is broken but still usable?
Chapter on Zakat on Gold and Silver
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
If jewelry is broken in a manner that does not prevent its use or wearing, it is treated as if it were whole, and Zakat is not obligatory upon it. This ruling applies unless the owner intends to melt it down and recast it, in which case Zakat becomes due because the owner has diverted it from its intended use.
