Is Zakat obligatory on leaves (waraq) of plants such as Sidr, Mallow, Soapwort, Thyme, and Myrtle?
Chapter on Zakat on Crops and Fruits
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
Zakat is not obligatory on anything that is not grain (habb) or fruit (thamar), regardless of whether it is measurable by volume (kayl) or stored (idukhar). Therefore, Zakat is not due on leaves such as those of Sidr, Mallow, Soapwort, Thyme, and Myrtle because they are not explicitly mentioned (mansus 'alayh) and do not resemble what is mentioned. The inference from the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him, 'There is no Zakat on grain or fruit until it reaches five wasqs,' implies that Zakat is not obligatory on anything else. Furthermore, Zakat is not due on permissible grain, so it is even less due on leaves.
Supporting text
Ibn Aqil stated that if Zakat is not due on the fruit of the Sidr tree, it is even less due on its leaves.
