Is Zakat obligatory on offspring born from a cross between wild and domesticated animals?
Chapter on Zakat on Cows
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
Zakat is obligatory on offspring resulting from a cross between wild and domesticated animals, regardless of whether the male was wild or the female was wild. The basis for this ruling is that the offspring is derived from something upon which Zakat is due and something upon which Zakat is not due, leading to the obligation, similar to offspring resulting from animals subject to Zakat (Sa'imah) and those kept for feeding (Ma'loofah).
Supporting text
Imam Malik and Imam Abu Hanifa hold that Zakat is due only if the mother is domesticated, basing this on the principle that the offspring follows the mother. Imam Al-Shafi'i maintains that no Zakat is due because the offspring originates from a wild animal, thus resembling offspring resulting from two wild animals.
