Primary text
The preferred ruling, as narrated by Muhammad ibn al-Hakam from Ahmad, is that Zakat should be paid where the wealth is located. If the wealth is divided between the city where the person resides and another city, such as Misr, Zakat should be paid for each portion where it is situated. If a person is absent from their hometown and family but has their wealth with them, it is permissible to distribute the Zakat across the various locations where they are present.
