Primary text

Sequential feeding for expiation is not obligatory. Ahmad, according to al-Athram's narration, held this view, permitting the distribution over several days until the required amount is completed. This is because the Almighty did not stipulate sequence in the act of feeding. If sexual intercourse occurs during the feeding period, the previously completed feeding is not invalidated, and re-commencement is not required. Abu Hanifa and Shafi'i support this view.

Malik required recommencement (Istinaf) because the act of feeding is akin to the expiation of Dhihar, which requires renewal upon intercourse, similar to fasting.
