Is expiation due if the husband observes the temporary prohibition without subsequent relations?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Zihar
Primary text
Expiation is not due if the husband adheres to the prohibition for the duration specified in his statement and does not return to intercourse. This is because the obligation for expiation is tied to those who violate what they stated by returning to their wives, according to the divine decree. Since the one who observed the time limit did not return to what he forbade during that period, no expiation is incumbent upon him.

Tawoos held that expiation is obligatory even if the prohibition period concludes without the husband breaking his vow, a view contradicted by the ruling that only returning to relations mandates expiation, as evidenced by the case of Salama ibn Sakhr.
