Is giving Harisa, Kaboul, or Siwiq permissible for expiation?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Zihar
Primary text
Harisa and Kaboul are not permissible because they have moved beyond customary staple food into the category of a side dish (Idam). The correct view is that Siwiq (roasted ground grain) is also invalid for the same reason. However, it is plausible that Siwiq is sufficient in some regions where it is consumed as a staple food.
Supporting text
If bread or Siwiq is given, the amount must not be less than what results from one Mudd of grain or one and one-third Rital of flour. Al-Kharqi stated that one Mudd yields two Rutls of bread, which is the norm, but if the grain used is barley, the required weight must be double.
