The contention that the expiation lapses because its time has passed, having been due before intercourse, is refuted. Evidence supports that only one expiation is due, as in the Hadith of Salama ibn Sakhr, whom the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered to pay one expiation after he performed Zihar and then had intercourse before expiation. This is because both the act of Zihar and the subsequent return to the wife occurred, falling under the general statement: "Then they return to what they have said, then [there is] the emancipation of a slave" (Quran 58:3). Furthermore, obligations like prayer must be performed even after their designated time has passed.
