What is the ruling regarding the expiation of a Muslim who commits Zihar and then apostatizes?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Zihar
Primary text
If a Muslim performs Zihar and then apostatizes, fasting for his Zihar expiation during apostasy is invalid. If he expiates through emancipation or feeding, Ahmad adopted the view that this is insufficient. Al-Qadi stated that the established madhhab is that the matter is suspended (mawquf). If he reverts to Islam, it becomes evident that the expiation was valid. If he dies or is killed while apostate, it becomes evident that it was invalid, similar to all his other transactions.
