Does sequential fasting remain unbroken if a person breaks the fast due to a life-threatening illness (Marad Makhuf)?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Zihar
Primary text
If the fast is broken due to a life-threatening illness, the sequence is not broken. This ruling is narrated from Ibn Abbas and supported by Al-Muzani, Malik, Ishaq, Al-Shafi'i in his old position, and others. The supporting evidence is that the break is due to a cause beyond the person's control, akin to a woman's menstruation.
Supporting text
A second view, held by Al-Shafi'i in his new position, Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, and the companions of Abu Hanifa, states that the sequence is broken because the person broke the fast through their own action, requiring a restart, similar to breaking the fast for travel.
