There are two narrations concerning the requirement of expiation. The first narration dictates that expiation is required because it is a form of prohibition, resembling the situation where one prohibits their own wealth.

Supporting text

The second narration states that no expiation is required. Ibn al-Qasim narrated from Ahmad, concerning one who compares his wife to the back of a man, that it is not Zihar and that nothing is incumbent upon him, as the comparison is made to something not intended for enjoyment, similar to comparing her to another person's wealth.
