Hadith 24:36
Abu Usama narrated to us, from Umar ibn Hamza, who said: Salim informed me, from his father, that when Umar removed Shurahbil ibn Hasana, he [Shurahbil] said: "Did you remove me due to your displeasure with me?" He [Umar] said: "No, but we saw someone who is stronger than you, and we feared Allah that we might keep him [in office] while we have seen someone who is stronger than you." Shurahbil said to him: "Then excuse me." So Umar stood upon the pulpit and said: "We had employed Shurahbil ibn Hasana, then we removed him, not because of any displeasure I found with him, but because we saw someone who is stronger than him, and we feared Allah that we might keep him [in office] while we have seen someone who is stronger than him." Then Umar looked in the evening at the people, and they were flocking to the official who had been appointed, while Shurahbil was coming alone. Umar said: "What is the world? For it is [nothing but] a base thing."
حدثنا أبو أسامة عن عمر بن حمزة قال أخبرني سالم عن أبيه أن عمر لما نزع شرحبيل بن حسنة قال حدثنا عمر عن سخطة نزعني قال لا ولكنا رأينا من هو أقوى منك فتحرجنا من الله أن نقره وقد رأينا من هو أقوى منك فقال له شرحبيل فاعذرني فقام عمر على المنبر فقال كنا استعملنا شرحبيل بن حسنة ثم نزعناه من غير سخطة وجدتها عليه ولكنا رأينا من هو أقوى منه فتحرجنا من الله أن نقره وقد رأينا من هو أقوى منه فنظر عمر من العشي إلى الناس وهم يلوذون العامل الذي استعمل وشرحبيل يجيء وحده فقال عمر ما الدنيا فإنها لكاع
