Hadith 24:43
Muhammad ibn Bishr narrated to us, he said: Isma'il narrated to us, from Qays, he said: I witnessed 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud come to demand from Sa'd dirhams that he had borrowed from the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal). He said, "Return this money." Sa'd said, "I think you will encounter evil." He said, "Return this money." Sa'd said, "Are you anything but Ibn Mas'ud, a slave from Hudhayl?" 'Abdullah said, "Are you anything but Ibn Hamna?" Sa'd's nephew said, "I find that you two are companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and the people look to you both." Sa'd raised his hands, saying, "O Allah, by the Lord of the heavens and the earth..." Ibn Mas'ud said, "Woe to you, say a statement that does not involve cursing." Sa'd said, "By Allah, were it not for the fear of Allah, I would have invoked a supplication against you that would not miss you." 'Abdullah then departed as he was.
حدثنا محمد بن بشر قال حدثنا إسماعيل عن قيس قال شهدت عبد الله بن مسعود جاء يتقاضى سعدا دراهم اسلفها إياه من بيت المال فقال رد هذا المال فقال سعد أظنك لاقيا شرا قال رد هذا المال قال فقال سعد هل أنت إلا بن مسعود عبد من هذيل قال فقال عبد الله هل أنت إلا بن حمنة قال فقال أبن أخي سعد أجد أنكما لصاحبا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ينظر الناس إليكما فرفع سعد يديه يقول اللهم برب السماوات والأرض فقال بن مسعود ويحك قل قولا لا تلعن قال فقال سعد أما والله أن لولا مخافة الله لدعوت عليك دعوة لا تخطئك قال فانصرف عبد الله كما هو
