Hadith 24:84

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, who said: I saw Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, and al-Hajjaj had struck him and made him stand at the door of the mosque. He said: They began saying, "Curse the liars." So Abd al-Rahman began saying, "May the curse of Allah be upon the liars," then he would remain silent. Then he would say, "Ali ibn Abi Talib, and Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, and al-Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd." So I knew, when he remained silent and then initiated them and raised them [in his speech], that he did not mean them.
