Hadith 24:88

Affan narrated to us, he said: Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, he said: Al-Mughirah narrated to us, from Thabit ibn Hurmuz, from 'Abbad, who said: Al-Mukhtar brought wealth to Ali ibn Abi Talib from Al-Mada'in, and his uncle, Sa'd ibn Mas'ud, was in charge of it. He said: So he placed the wealth before him, and he [Al-Mukhtar] was wearing a red *muqatta'ah* (garment). He said: So he [Ali] put his hand in and extracted a bag containing about fifteen hundred [dirhams]. He said: "This is from the wages of prostitutes." He said: So Ali said: "We have no need for the wages of prostitutes." He said: And he ordered the wealth of Al-Mada'in to be taken up to the public treasury (*Bayt al-Mal*). He said: Then, when he turned away, Ali said to him: "By Allah, if his heart were split open, it would be found full of the love of Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza."
