Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 33:1205

Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated to us, he said: Musa ibn Muslim narrated to us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Sabit, who said: Sa’id ibn Amr ibn Hudhaym was a governor over Egypt. It reached Umar ibn al-Khattab that a time would pass him by in which no smoke would rise from his oven (i.e., he was in poverty). So he sent him some wealth. He bought with it what would suffice him and his family. Then he said to his wife, "If we were to give this to a merchant, perhaps he might earn something for us with it." She said, "Do so." So the man gave it away in charity and distributed it until nothing of it remained. Then they became in need. His wife said to him, "If you would look into those dirhams and take them back, for we have become in need of them." He turned away from her. Then she returned and said it again, so he turned away from her until it became clear to her that he had already spent them. He said: She began to blame him. He said: So he sought the help of Khalid ibn al-Walid against her, and he spoke to her and said, "You have harmed him." It was as if he had infected her with it (i.e., made her understand). Then she said it to him again. When the man saw that, he knelt upon his knees and said, "It would not please me to be held back from the first gathering on the Day of Resurrection, even if I were to possess everything upon the earth. And if a houri from the houris were to reveal her fingers to the people of the earth from above the heavens, the people of the earth would find their scent. So I leave them for you, but for me to leave you for them is more appropriate than for me to leave them for you." When she saw that, she desisted from him.
