Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 33:1223

Ibn ‘Ulayyah narrated to us, from Layth, from Mujahid, who said: The scholars have departed, and there remain only the learners. There is no one among you today who exerts himself (mujtahid) except that he is like a player compared to those who came before you.
