Hadith 33:1244
Ya'la ibn 'Ubayd narrated to us, he said: We entered upon Muhammad ibn Suqah, and he said: "I will narrate to you a hadith, perhaps it will benefit you, for it has benefited me." He said: 'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah said to us: "O son of my brother, those who were before you used to dislike superfluous speech, except for the Book of Allah the Exalted—that you recite it—or enjoining good, or forbidding evil, or speaking about your need in your livelihood which you cannot do without. Do you deny that there are over you guardians, noble, recording [angels]? And that on the right and on the left is a seated one? Not a word does he utter but there is a watcher by him, ready [to record]. Does one of you not feel ashamed if his scroll were unfolded, which he dictated at the beginning of his day, and most of what is in it is neither of the affairs of his religion nor his worldly life?"
