Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 33:1320

A man from the companions of Muhammad would have three days pass him by without finding anything to eat. He would find a piece of skin, roast it, and suffice himself with it. And when he did not find anything, he would take a stone and bind his stomach with it.
