Hadith 33:1359
Al-Muharibi narrated to us, from Malik ibn Mighwal, who said: Abu Ya'fur narrated to me, from al-Musayyib ibn Rafi', from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, who said: It is appropriate for the bearer of the Quran to be known by his night when the people are sleeping, and by his day when the people are breaking their fast, and by his sadness when the people are rejoicing, and by his weeping when the people are laughing, and by his silence when the people are mixing [in idle talk], and by his humility when the people are acting arrogantly. It is appropriate for the bearer of the Quran to be weeping, sorrowful, forbearing, wise, and quiet. It is not appropriate for the bearer of the Quran to be—Abu Bakr mentioned a word—neither clamorous, nor shouting, nor harsh.
