Hadith 33:1500
Al-Hasan ibn Musa narrated to us, he said: Sa’id ibn Zayd, the brother of Hammad ibn Zayd, narrated to us, he said: Uthman al-Shahham narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Wasi’ narrated to us, he said: I arrived from Makkah, and there was a bridge over the trench. I was taken, and I was brought to Marwan ibn al-Muhallab, who was the governor of Basra. He welcomed me and said, "What is your need, O Abu Abd Allah?" I said, "My need is that, if you are able, you should be as the brother of Banu ‘Adi said." He asked, "And who is the brother of Banu ‘Adi?" I said, "Al-‘Ala’ ibn Ziyad." He said, "A friend of his was once appointed to a position, so he wrote to him: 'To proceed: If you are able to not spend a night except that your back is light, your stomach is empty, and your hand is clean from the blood of the Muslims and their wealth, then if you do that, there will be no way against you. *The way is only against those who wrong the people and commit aggression upon the earth* [Ash-Shu'ara: 42].'" Marwan said, "By Allah, he spoke the truth and gave good counsel." Then he said, "What is your need, O Abu Abd Allah?" I said, "My need is that you let me join my family." He said, "Yes."
