Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 33:1502

Affan narrated to us, he said: Hammad bin Salamah narrated to us, from Ali bin Zaid, from al-Hasan, that three scholars gathered. They said to one of them: "What is your hope (expectation of life)?" He said: "A month does not come upon me except that I think I will die within it." They said: "This is hope." They said to the second: "What is your hope?" He said: "A week does not come upon me except that I think I will die within it." They said to the third: "And what is your hope?" He said: "What hope does one have whose soul is in the hand of someone else?"
