Ibn ‘Ulayyah narrated to us, from Yunus, from al-Hasan, who said: ‘Umar was walking on a road, and ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar was with him. He saw a thin, emaciated girl who would stagger one moment and stand up the next. He said, “How miserable is this one! Who knows this girl?” ‘Abdullah said, “By Allah, this is one of your granddaughters.” He said, “My granddaughters?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Who is she?” He said, “The daughter of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar.” He said, “Woe to you, ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar! You have destroyed her with emaciation.” He said, “What are we to do? You have withheld from us what you have.” He looked at him and said, “What I have does not empower me to earn for your daughters as the people earn. No, by Allah, you have nothing from me except your share along with the Muslims.”
