Abu Khalid al-Ahmar, Ibn Idris, and Ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated to us, from Ibn ‘Ajlan, from Bukayr ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Ashajj, from Ma’mar ibn Abi Habibah, from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Adi ibn al-Khiyar, who said: ‘Umar said: "Indeed, when the servant humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah raises his wisdom and says: 'Rise, may Allah raise you.' So he is small in his own self, but great in the eyes of the people. And indeed, when the servant acts arrogantly and exceeds his limits, Allah casts him down to the earth and says: 'Be cast away, may Allah cast you away.' So he is great in his own self, but small in the eyes of the people, until he is even more contemptible to them than a pig."
