Hadith 33:383
Ghundar narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Ya'la ibn 'Ata, who said: Tamim ibn Ghaylan ibn Salamah narrated to me, saying: A man came to Abu al-Darda' while he was ill and said: "O Abu al-Darda', you have reached the brink of departing from the world, so command me with a matter by which Allah may benefit me and by which I may remember you." He said: "You are from a pardoned nation, so establish the prayer, pay the zakat if you have wealth, fast Ramadan, and avoid immoralities, then rejoice." The man repeated [his request] to Abu al-Darda', and Abu al-Darda' said the same thing to him. The man shook his garment and said: "Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We made it clear for the people..." up to His saying: "...and those who curse will curse them." Abu al-Darda' said: "Bring the man to me." He came, and Abu al-Darda' said: "What did you say?" He replied: "I was a man who learned from you knowledge that I did not possess, and I wanted you to tell me something by which Allah would benefit me, but you did not answer me with anything but one statement." Abu al-Darda' said: "Sit down, then comprehend what I say to you. Where are you in relation to a day when you will have nothing of the earth except the width of two cubits by the length of four cubits? Your family, who did not love to part with you, and your companions and brothers will come to you, and they will perfect the building over you, heap much earth upon you, and leave you to what is like you." "Then two black and blue angels with curly hair will come to you, their names being Munkar and Nakir. They will make you sit up, then they will ask you: 'Who are you? Upon what were you? And what do you say about this man?' If you say: 'By Allah, I do not know; I heard the people saying something, so I said what the people said,' then by Allah, you have been rejected and have fallen. And if you say: 'Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; Allah sent down His Book upon him, so I believed in it and in what he brought,' then by Allah, you have succeeded and been guided. And you will not be able to do that except by the steadfastness from Allah, along with what you see of the severity and the frightening." "Then where are you in relation to a day when you will have nothing of the earth except the place of your feet, and a day whose measure is fifty thousand years, in which the people will be standing for the Lord of the worlds, and there will be no shade except the shade of the Throne of the Lord of the worlds, and the sun will be brought near? If you are among the people of the shade, then by Allah, you have succeeded and been guided. And if you are among the people of the sun, then by Allah, you have been rejected and have fallen." "Then where are you in relation to a day when Hell will be brought, having blocked what is between the two horizons, and it will be said: 'You will not enter Paradise until you wade through the Fire'? If you have light with you, the bridge will be straight for you, then by Allah, you have succeeded and been guided. And if you do not have light with you, some of the hooks of Hell, or its claws, or its barbs will cling to you, then by Allah, you have been rejected and have fallen. By the Lord of Abu al-Darda', I am only saying the truth, so comprehend what I say."
