Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 33:462

Abu Mu’awiyah narrated to us, from Musa ibn Ubaydah, from Abdullah ibn Kharash, who said: I saw Abu Dharr at al-Rabadhah, and with him was a wife of his who was dark-skinned or pale. He said: And he was in a black tent. He said: It was said to him, "O Abu Dharr, if only you had taken a wife who was of higher status than this one." He said: So he replied, "By Allah, that I should take a wife who humbles me is more beloved to me than that I should take a wife who elevates me." They said, "O Abu Dharr, you are a man for whom hardly any children remain." He said: So he replied, "And we praise Allah, who takes them from us in the abode of perishing and stores them for us in the abode of remaining." He said: And he used to sit on a piece of haircloth and a saddlebag. He said: So they said, "O Abu Dharr, if only you had taken a carpet that was softer than this carpet of yours." He said: So he replied, "O Allah, forgiveness. Take what you have been given; we were only created for an abode for which we work, and to it we shall return."
