Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 33:463

Abu Mu’awiyah narrated to us, from al-Hasan, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja’d, from his father, who said: Abu al-Darda’ sent a messenger to Abu Dharr. The messenger came and said to Abu Dharr: "Your brother, Abu al-Darda’, sends you greetings of peace and says to you: 'Fear Allah and [be mindful of] the rights of the people.'" Abu Dharr said: "What do I have to do with the people? I have already left their white [silver] and their yellow [gold] for them." Then he said to the messenger: "Go to the house." The messenger went with him. When he entered his house, there was a little bit of food in a cloak, not much, and some of it had scattered. Abu Dharr began to sweep it up and put it back into the cloak. Then he said: "Indeed, part of a person’s understanding is his gentleness in his livelihood." Then a little food was brought and placed before him. He said to me: "Eat." The man began to dislike putting his hand into the food because of how little he saw of it. Abu Dharr said to him: "Put your hand [in], for by Allah, I am more afraid of its abundance than I am of its scarcity." The man ate, then returned to Abu al-Darda’ and informed him of what he had replied to him. Abu al-Darda’ said: "The sky has not shaded, nor has the earth carried, anyone more truthful in speech than you, O Abu Dharr."
