Hadith 33:652
Abu Usama narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Muslim, from Masruq, who said: There was a man in the desert who had a dog, a donkey, and a rooster. The rooster would wake them for prayer, the donkey would carry their water and they would benefit from it and carry their tent upon it, and the dog would guard them. A fox came and took the rooster, and they grieved for the loss of the rooster. The man was righteous, so he said, "Perhaps it is for the best." They remained as long as Allah willed, then a wolf came and tore open the belly of the donkey and killed it. They grieved for the loss of the donkey, and the righteous man said, "Perhaps it is for the best." Then they remained after that as long as Allah willed, then the dog was struck [and died]. The righteous man said, "Perhaps it is for the best." When they woke up in the morning, those who were around them had been taken captive, while they remained. He said: Those people were taken because of the noise and clamor they had, while these people had nothing that would make noise, for their dog, their donkey, and their rooster were gone.
