Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 33:765

Abdullah ibn Idris narrated to us, from Ta’mah, from Abdullah ibn Isa, who said: There was among those who were before you a man who worshipped Allah for forty years in the wilderness. Then he said, "O my Lord, I have longed to worship You in the sea." So he came to some people and asked them to carry him, and they carried him. Their ship sailed with them for as long as Allah willed it to sail, then it stopped. There was a tree at the edge of the water. He said, "Put me down on this tree." They said, "What will keep you alive on this?" He said, "I only asked you to carry me, so put me down where I wish." So they put him down, and their ship sailed on. Then an angel wanted to ascend to the heaven, so he spoke the words with which he used to ascend, but he was unable to do so. He knew that this was due to a sin he had committed. So he came to the man of the tree and asked him to intercede for him with his Lord. He prayed and supplicated for the angel. He said: And he requested of his Lord that he (the man) be the one to take his own soul, so that it would be easier for him than the Angel of Death. When his appointed time arrived, the angel came to him and said, "I have requested of my Lord that He allow me to intercede for you just as He allowed you to intercede for me, and that I be the one to take your soul, so take it from wherever you wish." He said: So he prostrated a prostration, and a tear came out of his eye, and he died.
