Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 33:866

'Affan ibn Muslim narrated to us, he said: Juwayriyah ibn Asma' narrated to us, he said: Nafi' narrated to us, he said: 'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Umar said to 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz: "O Commander of the Faithful, what prevents you from decreeing what you want? For by the One in Whose hand is my soul, I would not care if the cooking pots boiled with me and you in them regarding it." He said: "Is this truly from you, my son?" He said: "Yes, by Allah." He said: "Praise be to Allah who has placed among my offspring one who assists me in the affair of my Lord. My son, if I were to take the people by surprise with what you say, I would not feel secure that they would reject it. And if they rejected it, I would find no alternative but the sword, and there is no good in a good that only comes by the sword. My son, I am training the people as one trains a difficult beast. If my life is prolonged, I hope that Allah will cause me to accomplish something. And if death overtakes me, then Allah knows what I intend."
