Hadith 33:940

Abu Usama narrated to us, from Awf, from Khalid al-Rab'i, who said: There was a man among the Children of Israel, and he was obscure in knowledge, and he innovated an innovation, and he called the people [to it], and he was followed. And he remembered one night, and he said: "Suppose these people do not know what I have innovated; does Allah not know what I have innovated?" He said: So his repentance reached the point that he pierced his collarbone and put a chain in it, and tied it to one of the pillars of the mosque. He said: "I will not remove it until I am forgiven." He said: So Allah revealed to a prophet from among the prophets of the Children of Israel—and he was not one who would deny the revelation—that: "Say to so-and-so: If your sin had been between Me and you, I would have forgiven you. But what about those of My servants whom you led astray, so they entered the Fire?"
