Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 33:942

Abu Usama narrated to us, from Sufyan, who said: A man from the people of Sana’a narrated to us, from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said: A man passed by a monk and said, "O monk, how is your remembrance of death?" He said, "I do not lift a foot nor place another except that I see that I am dead." He said, "How is the habit of your energy?" He said, "I have not seen anyone who has heard of the mention of Paradise and Hell, and an hour passes over him in which he does not pray." The man said, "I pray and weep until the herbs grow from my tears." The monk said, "Indeed, that you laugh while you are confessing your sin to Allah is better than that you weep while you are conceited with your deed. For the prayer of the conceited one does not ascend above him." The man said, "Advise me." The monk said, "You must practice asceticism in the world, and do not dispute its people for it. Be like the palm tree: if it is eaten from, it provides something good; if it is placed, it provides something good; and if it falls upon something, it does not harm it nor break it. And be sincere to Allah with the sincerity of a dog to its masters: even if they starve it and beat it, it refuses [to do anything] but be sincere to them and guard them."
