Hadith 33:949

Affan ibn Muslim narrated to us, he said: Mahdi narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Hamid, the companion of al-Ziyadi, narrated to us, from Ibn Munabbih, who said: There was among those who were before you a man who worshipped Allah for a time. Then he requested a need from Allah and fasted for Allah for seventy [days], eating every Saturday eleven times. He said: He requested his need from Allah, but it was not granted to him. So he turned to his soul and said: "O soul, it is from you that I have been hindered. If there were any good in you, your need would have been granted, but there is no good in you." He said: Then an angel descended to him at that very moment and said to him: "O son of Adam, this hour of yours, in which you have rebuked your soul, is better than all your worship that has passed, and Allah has granted you the need which you asked for."
