Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 33:984

Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Ma’mar, from Yahya ibn al-Mukhtar, from al-Hasan, who said: "Indeed, the believer is a maintainer over his own self, holding his self to account for the sake of Allah. The reckoning on the Day of Resurrection will only be light for a people who held their selves to account in the world. And the reckoning on the Day of Resurrection will only be difficult for a people who took this matter without any self-reckoning. Indeed, a thing may suddenly come upon the believer and please him, so he says: 'By Allah, I truly desire you, and you are indeed among my needs, but by Allah, there is no way to reach you. Far be it! A barrier has been placed between me and you.' And if something escapes him, he returns to his self and says: 'What did I intend by this? What do I have to do with this? I apologize to Allah for it; by Allah, I will never return to this, if Allah wills.' Indeed, the believers are a people whom the Qur’an has bound, and it has come between them and their destruction. The believer is a captive in the world, striving for the release of his neck; he does not feel secure in anything until he meets Allah, knowing that he will be held accountable for all of that."
