Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 38:43

Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, he said: Ja’far ibn Ziyad narrated to us, from Abu al-Sayrafi, from Safwan ibn Qabisah, from Tariq ibn Shihab, who said: When Uthman was killed, I said: "What keeps me in Iraq when the community (al-jama’ah) is in Medina with the Emigrants (Muhajirun) and the Helpers (Ansar)?" He said: So I went out, and I was informed that the people had pledged allegiance to Ali. He said: I reached al-Rabadhah, and Ali was there. A man placed a seat for him, and he sat upon it, and it was as if a man were standing. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Indeed, Talhah and al-Zubayr pledged allegiance willingly, not under compulsion, then they sought to corrupt the matter and split the staff of the Muslims." And he incited [the people] to fight them. He said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali stood up and said: "Did I not tell you that the Arabs would have a turn [of turmoil] upon the killing of this man? If only you had stayed in your house where you were—meaning Medina—for I fear that you will be killed in a state of being lost, with no helper for you." He said: Ali replied, "Sit down, for you are only yearning like a slave girl, and you have a yearning like the yearning of a slave girl. Should I sit in Medina like a hyena, listening to the blood? I have struck this matter on its back and its belly, or its head and its eyes, and I found nothing but the sword or disbelief."
