Hadith 38:58
Abu Usama narrated to us, he said: Hisham bin Urwah narrated to us, from his father, from Abdullah bin al-Zubayr, who said: When al-Zubayr stood on the day of the Battle of the Camel, he called me, so I stood by his side. He said: "No one is killed today except a wrongdoer or one wronged, and I see that I will be killed today as one wronged. My greatest concern is my debt. Do you think our debt will leave anything of our wealth?" Then he said: "O my son, sell our wealth and pay off our debt. I bequeath to you one-third, and one-third of that third is for your children. If anything remains of our wealth after paying the debt, one-third of it is for your children." Abdullah bin al-Zubayr said: He began to instruct me regarding his debt and said: "O my son, if you are unable to pay any part of it, then seek help from my Master (Mawla) for it." He said: By Allah, I did not know what he meant until I said: "O my father, who is your Master?" He replied: "Allah." He said: By Allah, I never fell into a difficulty regarding his debt except that I said: "O Master of al-Zubayr, pay off his debt for him," and He would pay it off. He said: Al-Zubayr was killed, and he did not leave behind a dinar or a dirham, except for lands, among them al-Ghaba, and eleven houses in Medina, two houses in Basra, a house in Kufa, and a house in Egypt. He said: The debt that was upon him was only because a man would come to him with wealth and entrust it to him, so al-Zubayr would say: "No, but let it be a loan, for I fear it might be lost." He never held any position of authority, nor tax collection, nor land tax, nor anything else, except for being in a military expedition with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), or with Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman.
