Hadith 38:77
Ahmad ibn Abd Allah narrated to us, he said: Za’idah narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Qays, from Zayd ibn Wahb, who said: Talha and al-Zubayr arrived until they descended upon Basra and cast out Sahl ibn Hunayf. This reached ‘Ali, and ‘Ali had sent him over it. So he (Ali) came until he descended at Dhu Qar. He sent ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abbas to Kufa, but they were slow to respond to him. Then ‘Ammar came to them, and they went out. Zayd said: I was among those who went out with him. He said: He (Ali) refrained from Talha, al-Zubayr, and their companions, and invited them until they initiated the fighting against him. He fought them after the noon prayer, and the sun had not set while around the camel were eyes blinking from those who were defending it. ‘Ali said: "Do not finish off a wounded man, do not kill one who is fleeing, and whoever closes his door and lays down his weapon, he is safe." Their fighting was only that evening alone. They came the next day speaking to ‘Ali about the spoils. ‘Ali recited this verse, saying: "Indeed, Allah says: 'And know that anything you obtain of war booty - then indeed, for Allah is one fifth it and for the Messenger.'" He said: "Which of you will take ‘A’ishah?" They said: "Glory be to Allah! Our mother?" He said: "Is she forbidden?" They said: "Yes." ‘Ali said: "For she is forbidden from her daughters just as she is forbidden from her." He said: "Is it not upon them to observe the waiting period for the slain for four months and ten days?" They said: "Yes." He said: "And do they not have the quarter and the eighth from their husbands?" They said: "Yes." Then he said: "What is the matter with the orphans that they do not take their wealth?" Then he said: "O Qanbar, whoever recognizes anything, let him take it." Zayd said: So he returned what was in the camp and elsewhere. He said: ‘Ali said to Talha and al-Zubayr: "Did you not pledge allegiance to me?" They said: "We seek the blood of ‘Uthman." ‘Ali said: "The blood of ‘Uthman is not with me." ‘Amr ibn Qays said: A man from Hadramawt called Abu Qays narrated to us, he said: When Qanbar called out, "Whoever recognizes anything, let him take it," a man passed by a pot of ours while we were cooking in it, and he took it. We said: "Leave it until what is in it is cooked." He said: So he kicked it with his foot, then he took it.
