Hadith 18:1148
Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Abu al-Ahwas narrated to us, from Simak, from Hanash ibn al-Mu'tamir, who said: A pit was dug in Yemen for a lion, and the lion fell into it. The people began to crowd at the edge of the pit, and a man fell into it, and he clung to another, and the other clung to another, until four fell into it and they all perished in it. The people did not know what to do. Then Ali came and said: "If you wish, I will judge between you with a judgment that shall be binding upon you until you come to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." He said: "I assign the blood money (diyah) upon those who were present at the edge of the pit." So he assigned for the first one who was in the pit a quarter of the blood money, and for the second a third of the blood money, and for the third half of the blood money, and for the fourth the full blood money. He said: They were satisfied with that until they came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and informed him of Ali's judgment, and he approved the judgment.
