Hadith 18:1209
Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Rahim narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Bukayr ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Ashajj, from Ya'la ibn Ubayd, who said: We went on a military expedition to the land of the Byzantines, and with us was Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, the companion of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The people were under the command of Abd al-Rahman ibn Khalid ibn al-Walid during the time of Mu'awiyah. While we were with him, a man came to him and said: "The commander has been brought four non-Arab captives." He ordered them to be tied up, and they were shot with arrows until they were killed. Abu Ayyub stood up in alarm until he came to Abd al-Rahman and said: "Did you tie them up? I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbidding the tying up of animals [for slaughter or target practice]. I would not like to tie up even a chicken, even if I were to have such and such [wealth]." He [Abd al-Rahman] considered that a grave matter, so he called for his young servants and freed them in place of what he had done.
