Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 18:1338

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Muhammad bin Bakr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: I said to ‘Ata’: A man killed a man intentionally, then he fled and was not apprehended until he died, and he left behind wealth. He said: His blood money (diyah) is [to be paid] from his wealth, the blood money of the one killed. It was said to him: [What if] the killer was imprisoned until he died? He said: They have killed him; they imprisoned him until he died in prison.
