Hadith 10:262

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Abdullah bin Numayr narrated to us, from Abd al-Malik bin Abi Sulayman, from Ata, who said: Ibn Mas’ud was approached regarding a man who said to his wife, "Your rope is upon your shoulder" (a metaphor for divorce/letting her go). Ibn Mas’ud wrote to Umar, and Umar wrote back, "Let him meet me at the season (pilgrimage)." So he met him at the season. Then he (Umar) sent for Ali, and Ali said to him, "I adjure you by Allah, what did you intend?" He said, "I intended my wife." He (Ali) said, "Then separate between them."
