Hadith 10:416
Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Ibn Idris narrated to us, from Dawud, from al-Sha’bi, who said: When ‘Urwah sent to Shurayh, he made an excuse to him, so he insisted upon him that he must speak. He said: "Indeed, Allah has established practices (sunan), and indeed the people have introduced innovations (bid'ah), and they have intentionally mixed their innovations with the practices. So, if anything of that reaches you, then distinguish the practices and execute them according to their proper manner, and attribute the innovations to their people." "As for 'taliq' (divorced), it is well-known. And as for 'al-battah' (the irrevocable), it is an innovation. We hold him to his innovation; if he wishes, he may delay, and if he wishes, he may proceed."
