Hadith 10:908
Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Abu Hurra, who said: I asked al-Hasan about a man who abandoned his wife for seven months. He said: "He has prolonged the abandonment." I said: "Does the *ila’* (oath of continence) apply to him?" He said: "Did he swear an oath?" I said: "No." He said: "There is no *ila’* unless he swears an oath."
