Hadith 15:273
Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Bishr narrated to us, he said: Abdullah ibn al-Walid al-Muzani narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr narrated to me, from Abu al-Hayyaj, that al-Hajjaj summoned him and said: "Show me the letter of Umar to Ammar regarding *al-tila* (boiled grape juice)." He went out while he was sad, and al-Sha'bi met him and asked him, and he informed him of what al-Hajjaj had said to him. Al-Sha'bi said: "Hand over a sheet and an inkwell, for by Allah, I did not hear it from your father except one time." So he dictated to him: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Umar, the Commander of the Faithful, to Ammar ibn Yasir. To proceed: I was brought a drink from the direction of the people of al-Sham, so I asked about it, how it is made. They informed me that they boil it until two-thirds of it is gone and one-third remains. When that is done to it, its intoxication and the scent of its madness depart, and its forbidden aspect departs, and its lawful aspect remains." Abdullah said: And I think he said: "And the good of it." "So when this letter of mine reaches you, command those who are with you to make use of it in their drinks. And peace."
