Hadith 17:1145

Abu Mu’awiyah narrated to us, from al-A’mash, from Jami’ ibn Shaddad, from al-Aswad ibn Hilal, who said: ‘Abdullah was brought a scroll containing a hadith. He called for water, erased it, and then washed it. Then he ordered it to be burned. Then he said: "I adjure by Allah any man who knows of it being with anyone, that he inform me of it. By Allah, if I knew it were in the land of India, I would travel to it. It was by this that the People of the Book before you perished; they cast the Book of Allah behind their backs as if they did not know."

حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن جامع بن شداد عن الأسود بن هلال قال أتى عبد الله بصحيفة فيها حديث فدعا بماء فمحاها ثم غسلها ثم أمر بها فأحرقت ثم قال أذكر بالله رجلا يعلمها عند أحد إلا أعلمني به والله لو أعلم أنها بدار الهند لابتلغت إليها بهذا هلك أهل الكتاب قبلكم حتى نبذوا كتاب الله وراء ظهورهم كأنهم لا يعلمون
