Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 17:1304

Ja'far ibn 'Awn narrated to us, from Abu al-'Umays, from Ziyad, the freed slave of Mus'ab, from al-Hasan, that the companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) asked him, "What we spend on our families?" He said, "Whatever you spend on your families, without extravagance and without stinginess, then it is in the way of Allah."
